BLOG POST: Sports Broadcast and Branding
Welcome! Come with as I dive into the fast-paced world of sports, share behind the scenes insights, and offer powerful branding tips for athletes and aspiring media personalities. Using my passion and experience as a D1 collegiate athlete to bring trailblazing perspectives on the latest sports trends, the business of personal branding, and how to make my voice heard in the crowded media landscape.
As a woman in the world of sports, working twice as hard to get half the attention has become the standard. Not only am I seeking to change that narrative, but also pave the way for athletes to smoothly transition from being stars on the field to being the stars of their life.
In today’s digital world, the line between athlete and influencer is blurred– and my opinion is that is for the best. With media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, athletes can now connect directly with fans, share their stories, and build a personal brand that extends far beyond their athletic career. Whether you’re a collegiate athlete hoping to go pro or someone looking to make a name for themselves in sports media, developing a strong personal brand is key to staying relevant and creating opportunities.
Tell Your Story
My journey has consisted on finding what sets me apart and riding that until the brakes fall off. For example, in my sport Track and Field I compete in the Heptathlon. For those that think it sounds like some made up challenge for adrenaline junkies, it is seven events over the course of two days. With that, I have learned to be pretty good at multitasking. Second, I have realized the importance of storytelling. Every athlete has their own unique story, but the ones who know how to tell it well stand out. Find what makes you different from other athletes and even ones in your sport. Is it your background? Your struggles? A unique skill or talent? The key is find what makes you, you and to build your brand around that.
Be Authentic, Be Yourself!
In the world of sports media, authenticity is currency. Take Pat McAfee for example. I recently attended ESPN’s College GameDay live broadcast at the University of Oregon, and this personality stood out to me in particular. Not only is McAfee known as one of the most popular sports TV personalities, but his ability to bring energy to any crowd is what sets him apart. His strong personality and genuine excitement in what he does is what has grown his fan base over the years. To be build a strong personal brand, you have to let your personality shine through and stay true to who you are. Share those real life experiences, success, and even challenges. This will allow you to connect with your audience on a deeper level.
Leveraging Social Media
Social media is the new broadcasting tool for not just the regular person, but for athletes as well. The life of an elite athlete is something only a small percent of people get to experience. When you give the world a glimpse into your life as one, they are able be involved and therefore invested in your every move. This can mean showing behind the scenes of a training day in your life, showing fans what you do for fun, or advocating for a cause you care about can all be where you build relationships among those who are interested and support you in what you do. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have been particularly for athletes looking to build a brand around doing what they love. For example, I posted my first instagram reel in the spring of 2022 and have not only gained over 350k followers since then, but have also created opportunities for myself that propel me into the career I am perusing.
As an athlete, building your personal brand means more than showcasing your highlights. It is about resonating with your audience and reflects on who you are as a person. Think of your favorite athlete. Can you relate to them in one way or another? That can mean anything from sharing a hobby to liking the same kind of food. Your journey as an athlete is only part of your story. The brand you build around that will set you up for a legacy beyond being a player. Take control of your narrative now and start sharing, the spotlight is waiting for you!
